Why do still shot in old movies wobble?

I notice in older movies, (90s and back) that still shots, like in opening credits, that should be rock solid actually have a faint but noticeable wobble to them. Sometimes, it'll be words over a still and just the words shake. Newer, digitally-processed films don't have this effect. What causes this?
