Do you think it is necessary to read great historical books in high school?

I have to write a persuasive essay for ess. of english and we have to pick a side on the following question: is necessary to read great historical books in high school it? books such as Romeo and juliet hamlet all the historica fiction books! I need some info as well such as how the schools feel about that and stuff so give me your opinion and thanks =]
